History of Elim Homes
On July 1, 1945, Elim Homes opened its doors for the very first time to commence a work for the Lord in the care of the elderly amongst the assemblies Ontario. The humble beginnings arose out of the request of an elderly sister who two years earlier had expressed her need for care in the absence of immediate relatives in whom she could confide.
Five men sat in a Toronto hotel room and poured out their hearts to the Lord, seeking divine guidance, and counselling together, how best to provide security, shelter and love for elderly persons. It was known that the large home of deceased brother William Heels would be available at a nominal price, and would be a suitable residence in which to commence this new work. When opening day arrived, the Lord had provided sufficient to pay for the property and to purchase the contents of the house.
Thus began a work of God that has continued to experience His faithfulness for over 60 years. From a single large home with three elderly sisters as the first residents, Elim expanded over the years through several land acquisitions and building projects to a property occupying half a village block and a capacity for about 40 residents.
In the 60+ years of its existence, Elim Homes has cared for over 300 of the Lord's dear aged saints from the surrounding area as well as more distant locales. Most of our residents have been from Assemblies which gather in Christian simplicity and all come from different walks of life.
Constant improvements and enhancements are made to the Home as the need arises and as the Lord provides through the untiring efforts of the maintenance staff and assistance of those who volunteer their help in these areas. The spiritual tone of the Home is strengthened by morning devotions, weekly Bible studies, and noon hour messages with special speakers. Various groups come from time to time to visit and entertain, and special outings are made possible through the generosity of those who give their time an talents in this way. We especially value the support and encouragement of surrounding assemblies for their love and co-operation shown to the residents over the years.
We praise our God for His faithfulness and thank Him for all His people who give in so many ways to maintain the progress of the work, and support its financial needs. It was founded upon a Faith and Trust in our God, and continues to this day without any source but Him.
